Dr. Eileen J. Councill
Deputy Headmaster – Curriculum and Instruction

Dr. Councill joined CISQD in September 2016. She grew up in the United States and earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Dr. Councill then completed two Masters’ Degrees in Instructional Technology and Educational Leadership and Supervision. Following 12 years as a Mathematics teacher in the United States, Europe, and Africa, Dr. Councill transitioned into Administration and completed her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy at Fordham University. For the past 12 years, Dr. Councill has served as Principal, Deputy Head of School, and Head of School in American, IB and British Schools. In her spare time, Dr. Councill loves to travel, read, hike, run, take photographs, and SCUBA dive. She is a certified Rescue Scuba Diver.

Dr. Wallace Bai
Deputy Headmaster – Marketing and Public Relation

Dr. Bai joined CISQD in June 2013. He grew up in China and earned his Bachelor’s degree at Southeast University, China. Dr. Bai then completed MPhil in Risk and Financial Services and PhD in Export Financing at Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK. Following 10 years as a Research Methodology, Quantitative Methods, Business, and Economics teacher in the UK and China, Dr. Bai transitioned into Administration and served as Programme Coordinator, Principal, Regional Principal and Academic Operations Director of NCUK (ChinaProgramme) and Kaplan Higher Education (China).Dr. Bai loves hiking, reading, and traveling with his family.

Mr. Stewart Kerr
Head of Upper School and Business Studies Teacher

Mr. Kerr joined CISQD in summer 2013. He comes from the UK and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business from the Liverpool Business School, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Sunderland. He worked in management in the UK for six years and has taught Business Studies and English internationally for a total of eleven years. In his spare time, Stewart enjoys learning languages, playing football, hiking, and spending time with his family.

Emma Wang
Head of Lower School and English Teacher

Ms. Wang joined CISQD in May of 2011. She grew up in the city of Tai’an, which is famous for the Mountain Tai in China. Before working at CISQD, she studied in the University of Essex, UK for her Master’s degree in International Management. Between the year 2006 to 2008, she also worked for the British Olympic Sailing Team GBR as an official translator during the Olympic Games. In 2014, she completed and obtained the international teaching certificate, PGCEi. She is passionate about inspiring the students as well as establishing solid team work with her colleagues. And she enjoys playing piano, swimming and drama performance in her spare time.

Ms. Jelena Vugdelija
Head Lower School, MUN Coordinator, and Mathematics

Ms. Vugdelija comes from Croatia where she lived until 2012. She graduated from University of Split where she obtained a Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering. During her university life, she was a teaching assistant for a few years prior to teaching Mathematics, Physics and ICT at a high school level in her home country. Her education after that includes a PGCE course at University of Nottingham. In 2012, she was awarded a one year scholarship to teach in the UK after which she transitioned to the UAE and finally joined CISQD in August 2014. At CISQD she has been teaching GCSE, A-level and Further Mathematics courses. Her hobbies include riding a bicycle and riding a bicycle.

Mr. Jonathan Ng
Head of Department and English Teacher

Mr. Ng joined CISQD in August 2016. He grew up in the United Kingdom and completed a master’s degree in International Conflict Studies at Kings College London. After completing training to be an English Language Teacher, he taught English to students from all the world at one of London’s oldest English language schools before moving to China to continue his teaching career. He has been living and working in China for almost eight years now and is currently determined to gain fluency in Mandarin Chinese. On the weekends, Jonathan likes to play football, climb mountains, and sample local cuisine.

Ms. Yang Zhao
Head of Department and Mathematics Teacher

Ms. Zhao joined CISQD August 2010. She grew up in Qingdao and has earned her Bachelor of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics/Mathematics Education and Chinese Teaching Qualification. She was invited to the UK and taught in public and independent schools for 8 years. During that time, she obtained a Master of International Management and Policy in Education and a British Teaching Qualification. Ms. Yang Zhao loves outdoor activities such as rock climbing, skiing and also hand crafts.

Ms. Janet Bronson
Head of Physics Department and Physics Teacher

Ms. Bronson joined CISQD in August of 2014. She grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, one of the 5 great lakes, in the United States. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Liberty University in Pre-Medicine (Biology and Chemistry), her teaching certificate the following year, and her master’s degree in Physical Science from Michigan State University. She taught Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering for 25 years in the United States in a public high school of 1800 students in Jackson, Michigan. She is excited to be here with her husband in Qingdao and to share her wealth of knowledge with both staff and students. In her spare time, she enjoys taking walks in the mountains and bringing joy to others by cooking special American treats.

Dr. Olivia Yu
Head of Department and Chemistry Teacher

Dr. Yu joined CISQD in July of 2011. She grew up in Qingdao. She earned her Doctoral Degree from Ocean University of China in Environmental Science. She has taught iGCSE and A-level Chemistry for 6 years. In her spare time, Olivia likes to swim.

Ms. Haley Richardson
Department Coordinator and Biology Teacher

Ms. Richardson came to CISQD from the United States in 2015. She grew up on the coast of Maine in the U.S., and earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (Life Science) from the University of Maine. This is her first teaching assignment abroad. Haley enjoys vegetable gardening and nature photography.

Mr. Andries S. Botha
Head of Department and Business Studies Teacher

Mr. Botha joined CISQD in March 2015. He grew up in South Africa where he completed his degrees in Education and post degree in Economics. His teaching experience is diverse in that he has taught many different subjects (Economics, Business Studies, Mathematics and Computer Studies) at many different academic levels (IGCSE, AS, A2, 2nd year university). He has taught in South Africa, England, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China. Mr. Botha loves his family, music, motorcycling, golf and sport, in general.

Ms. Ronel Botha
Athletic Director, Physical Education Coordinator

Ms. Botha joined CISQD in August 2016. She grew up in Durban, South Africa. Mrs. Botha completed her teaching degree in 1979, majoring in PE and Geography. She started teaching in 1980 as a PE teacher at the school from which she graduated. Her teaching experience is quite diverse, as she has taught at various levels from Primary School to grade 12. Sport has always been her passion, as she excelled in Softball, Field Hockey and various other sports. She earned her National Colors in Softball, representing the country of South Africa, and was a provincial Field Hockey player. She has taught in schools in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and currently in China. Her hobbies are sewing, baking and researching newsworthy events. Mrs. Botha’s passion is playing golf (when there is time) and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Mr. Gavin Hester
History Department Coordinator and History Teacher

Mr. Hester joined CISQD in March 2017. He grew up in Andover, England, and completed a BA in History and Politics at Manchester Metropolitan University. This was later followed by a PGCSE in History at Hull University (1997-1998). He has since taught in the British Education system in England for 16 years, and 3 years as Head of History at El Alsson International School in Cairo, Egypt. In his spare time, he likes to travel, keep fit, play sports and walk.

Ms. Deborah Beech
Art Department Coordinator and Art Teacher

Ms.Beech joined CISQD in October 2016. Growing up in England, UK she studied BA Film Production, MA Screen Arts, and currently (on hold) PhD Women and Film. She has worked predominantly in England as an Artist in Residence and taught Art, Media, Film Production, Drama and English Literature. After moving to China in 2012, Deborah has taught Art to all age levels and is developing a book of photographs depicting the range of Art she has produced. Deborah’s love of cats, painting and filmmaking is how she spends her spare time.

Ms. Yi Sun
Drama, Chinese, Confucius Studies CoordinatorTeacher

Ms. Sun joined CISQD in October of 2014. She grew up locally in Qingdao and moved to Southampton, UK at the age of 17. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Greenwich. Her portfolio project of her degree year was nominated for the best design of the year and was short-listed for the top ten in the RIBA (The Royal Institute of British Architects) Award. Before coming to CISQD, she was working in practice architecture and also as a teaching assistant in Architecture School in UK. Yi moved back to Qingdao to look after her family. In her spare time, Ms. Sun enjoys painting, do hand crafting works and cooking for her big family.

Mr. Dermot Brennan
Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator

Mr. Brennan joined CISQD in August 2017. He grew up in Donegal, in the Northwest of Ireland. He completed his BSc in Physical Education and Biology at Dublin City University. He spent three years teaching a mixture of Physical Education and General Science in Ireland, where he was also very involved in the extra-curricular life of the school. He spent one year teaching Science at an international school in Doha, Qatar, before moving to Qingdao. Mr. Brennan’s hobbies include running, football, listening to music, and travelling.

Ms. Clare Gong

Ms. Clare had her master degree from University of Manchester, studied Global Operating Management. She has been working in CISQD since January 2010 as human resource co-operator and exam officer. She has rich experience in human resource management and administration. She is also familiar with international exam operations.

Mr. David Jonker
Deputy Head of Upper School and English Teacher

Mr.Jonker joined CISQD in August 2016. He grew up in South Africa and earned his Bachelor of Social Sciences Degree in English and Psychology. David Jonker then completed his Honors Degree in Psychology and went on to complete his Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Following two years as an English teacher in South Africa, David Jonker moved to China where he has taught for three years. During his time as an English teacher he has been involved in various roles, such as: Chess coordinator, subject leader and the School Magazine Editor. In his spare time, David Jonker enjoys traveling, reading, going to the gym, playing football, and writing poetry and short stories. He has aims of becoming a published writer.

Ms. Faye Cai
Deputy Head of Upper School and Chemistry Teacher

Ms. Cai joined CISQD in August 2013. She grew up locally in Qingdao and earned her Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry from the University of Science and Technology, Beijing. Ms. Cai then completed two master’s degrees in Chemistry at Michigan Technological University and in Education at the University of San Francisco. After about five years of teaching in an American high school and as a teaching assistant at university level in the United States, Ms. Cai decided to return home to Qingdao, to share her experiences and serve students intending to follow similar paths. In her spare time, Ms. Cai loves to travel.

Ms. Helen Dong
Deputy Head of Lower School and English Teacher

Ms. Dong joined CISQD in February of 2013. She graduated from Shandong University, majoring in English Linguistics. She has earned a Cambridge Celta Certificate and has also attended IELTS teacher training by the British Council. She has taught IELTS, IG English and other academic English courses for over 12 years. She has also worked in international schools for 10 years with rich experience in student management. In her spare time, she enjoys reading books, watching movies and doing fitness exercise.

Ms. Debra Sun
Deputy Head of Lower School and Business Teacher

Ms. Sun joined CISQD in August of 2015. She grew up in Weifang, Shandong province. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business English in a Chinese University, and her Master’s degree in Marketing at University of Leicester, UK. With work experience in international business, brand development and team leadership, she hopes to share her academic expertise and related business experience with her students.

Ms. Liv Zhang
Deputy Head of Upper School and Economics Teacher

Ms. Zhang joined CISQD in August of 2014. She grew up in Qingdao, China. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Amsterdam and her master’s degree in Finance (minor in Econometrics) from Tinbergen Institute of the University of Amsterdam. She worked as a teaching assistant in the Free University in Amsterdam for 3 years. Liv is excited to back in her hometown and to share her knowledge and passion of Economics with both staff and students. In her spare time, Ms. Zhang enjoys reading, gardening, origami, and she is cat lover.

Ms. Victoria Zheng
Deputy Head of English Department and English Teacher

Ms. Zheng joined CISQD in June of 2010. She grew up in Qingdao, a beautiful coastal city in Shandong Province, China. She earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Qingdao University of Science and Technology. Victoria taught English at the university level for 2 years. So far, Ms. Zheng has taught IGCSE English, TOEFL and SAT at CISQD and is eager to help students improve their English. In her spare time, Ms. Victoria Zheng enjoys reading, swimming and playing table tennis with her friends and family.

Ms. Peggy Xu
Deputy Head of Mathematics Department and Mathematics Teacher

Ms. Xu joined CISQD in November of 2011. She grew up in Binzhou, a city in Shandong Province. She earned both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Qingdao University in Mathematics. She received her teaching certificate (High School Mathematics, China) in July 2011 and PGCEi certificate in July 2017. She has been teaching A-Level Mathematics for 6 years at CISQD. She enjoys teaching and sharing her professional knowledge with students and colleagues. In her spare time, she enjoys doing handcraft such as making bracelets, scarves, and so on.

Ms. Susan Xu
Deputy Head of Department and Economics Teacher

Ms.Xu joined CISQD in August of 2009, at the very beginning of the school. She was born in the Northeastern area of China, and moved to Shandong Province at age 9 with her parents. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Jilin University in English and Master’s degree from Northeast Normal University in Applied Linguistics with a supplementary degree in Economics. Along with working at CISQD, she completed a PGCEi at the University of Nottingham. Susan has taught IGCSE Business Studies for 2 years and A-Level Economics for 5 years. She is good at sharing Economics and Business knowledge through examples that young learners are familiar with, and making complicated principles easily understood. 70% of Economics students taught by Ms. Xu are credited with either A* or A by the CIE Examination Board. In her spare time, Susan enjoys travelling, swimming and hiking with friends.

Mr. Matthew Babinger
English Teacher

Mr. Babinger joined CISQD in the fall of 2015. He is from Rochester, NY which is a small city in the Western part of New York State in the United States. Matthew has an undergraduate degree from the State University of New York in Brockport. Since graduating from S.U.N.Y. Brockport he has worked in many different areas in education ranging from after-school programs, administration and teaching Kindergarten to Grade 12. His hobbies are travelling, reading, bicycling and playing chess.

Mr. Frank Gaughan
English Teacher

Mr. Gaughan joined CISQD in April 2014. He was born in Oxford, England, and graduated with a B.Sc. in Linguistics from The University of East Anglia in the UK. He also has a Higher National Certificate in Chemistry. After 12 years of working in a research laboratory for a food company, Mr. Gaughan moved to China to apply his background in Linguistics to teach English as a Foreign Language. This included one year in Hangzhou, and since has taught here in Qingdao. He spends his free time walking the coast of Qingdao, and exploring the older areas to the west of the city. Mr. Gaughan is an avid watcher of movies.

Ms. Hema Sachania
English Teacher

Ms. Sachania joined CISQD in August 2017. She grew up in Zambia, Africa and moved to the U.K. when she was 10 years old. Miss Sachania completed her BA degree in English at De Montfort University as well as PGCE in Secondary English at University of Leicester a few years later. This is Miss Sachania’s first overseas job, although she had previously been teaching for two years in the U.K. In her spare time, Miss Sachania enjoys reading, writing poems, travelling and watching and reviewing films.

Mr. Roland Solivo
ECA Coordinator and English Teacher

Mr. Solivo joined CISQD in August 2016. He grew up in Canada in the province of Quebec and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Concordia University in Montreal. Mr. Solivo then completed a Graduate Diploma in Ecotoxicology also at Concordia. Following 12 years working primarily in pharmaceutical laboratories, Mr. Solivo returned to study at McGill University completing a Masters of Business Administration. Since completing his MBA, Mr. Solivo continued to work in the pharmaceutical industry in the areas of business development and management. Throughout this time, Mr. Solivo coached his children’s football teams in the Montreal area where his love of teaching and learning were reinforced. As a result, Mr. Solivo obtained an English teaching certificate to pursue new opportunities in a new area. In his spare time, Mr. Solivo loves to travel, read, eat great new foods, laugh with friends, enjoy the company of his family and, occasionally, exercise (football, skiing, swimming).

Ms. Nina Wang
Deputy Head of Upper School and Mathematics Teacher

Ms. Wang joined CISQD in August of 2009. She grew up in a very beautiful city called Weifang, which is world-famous for kites. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Shandong University in Information and Calculation Science (Mathematics), and her master’s degree in the major of Communication and Signal Science from The Ocean University of China. She owns both Chinese teaching certificate (Senior) and PGCEi teaching certificate from University of Nottingham. She is one of the first teachers at CISQD that has been teaching A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. She is gentile and optimistic and likes to provide help to students and other teachers. Nina loves music and playing basketball during her spare time and Qingdao has become her favorite city because of her career and happy family.

Ms. Maryse Pierce
Mathematics Teacher

Ms. Pierce joined CISQD in August 2016. She grew up in South Africa and received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2010. She then worked as a teacher in Xiangfan, Hubei for one year. In 2012, she returned home to South Africa to complete her PGCE and work as a teacher. In 2014, she moved to Qingdao where she taught in Chengyang, Qingdao for two years. Her interests include travelling, hiking, going to the gym and watching series.

Mr. Freedom Thabethe
Mathematics Teacher

Mr. Thabethe joined CISQD in August 2106. He grew up in Durban, South Africa and obtained his National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a Mechanical Technician in a manufacturing company for 6 years and decided to change careers to teaching. In 2015, he earned his Post Graduate Certificate in Education, specializing in the teaching of Mathematics and Technology, grades 8–12. Mr. Thabethe has been teaching Mathematics and Science since 2011. He is also registered as qualified teacher with the South African Council for Educators (SACE). Currently, he is completing anHonors Degree in Mathematics Education with the University of South Africa. Mr. Thabethe enjoys traveling, weight training, and singing.

Mr. Ted Cheng
Physics Teacher

Mr. Cheng joined CISQD in August 2017. He grew up in Taiwan and attended University in Southern California, United States, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He started teaching IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, corporate English and Physics, and A-Level computer hardware in China. He worked mostly at the English training centers. Ted spends time hiking, visiting rural villages, listening to soft music and swimming.

Mr. Paul Holt
Physics Teacher

Mr. Holt joined CISQD in January 2016. He grew up in Scotland and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow. He then went on to complete a master’s degree in Experimental Physics at Glasgow University and a Post Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education at Monash University in Australia. He taught Physics to international students (mostly from China) in New Zealand for 4 years. Paul really enjoys being in the classroom and building positive relationships with the students. In his spare time, he likes to travel, hike, keep fit and work on improving his Chinese.

Mr. John Barber
Chemistry Teacher

Mr.Barber joined CISQD in April 2014. He is a native of the United Kingdom and studied Biochemistry at the University of Manchester. He gained his PGCE from the University of Sunderland in 2015.Mr. Barber has spent extended periods of time abroad, living in the USA, Japan and now China. His interests include playing the guitar, travelling and cooking.

Mr. James Nandabi
Chemistry Teacher

Mr. Nandabi joined CISQD in 2013. He grew up in Kimilili, Kenya and attended Kenyatta University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Science Education. Before coming to China, Mr. Nandabi taught in Kenya, Tanzania, and the United States. He is an avid football player and bicyclist, and he also enjoys playing rugby and learning about astronomy.

Dr. Oswald Mason
Student Council Coordinator and Biology Teacher

Dr. Mason joined CISQD in September 2016. He grew up in Northern Ireland and earned his Bachelor of Science in Food Science. Dr. Mason then completed his PhD. in Veterinary Microbiology. He then worked for two years in a Veterinary Pharmaceutical company as a product development manager. Following this, Dr. Mason then applied his talents as a technical manager in a food testing laboratory. For the past 12 years, Dr. Mason has been teaching in Asia and has taught in South Korea, Nepal, Malaysia and China. He taught ESL before completing his PGCE and has been teaching Science and Biology in International Schools for 5 years. In his spare time, Dr. Mason likes to travel, read, play football, and cook

Mr. Paul McEwan
Business Studies and Economics teacher

Mr. McEwan joined CISQD in October 2016. He grew up in Sydney, Australia and in 1984 earned his Bachelor of Economics and Diploma in Education from the University of Sydney. He also gained his Master of Education degree in 2005. Following 31 years as an Economics, Business and Legal Studies teacher and in school administration and management, Mr.McEwan commenced his teaching journey abroad. In his spare time, he likes to travel, enjoy the great outdoors, attends many types of music concerts, and follows a wide range of sports including football and Formula One motor racing. He believes Asia is the most vibrant place in the world to live and work.

Mr. Gregory Venter
Accounting and Business Studies Teacher

Mr. Venter joined CISQD in August 2017, after teaching Accounting and Business Studies in South Africa for 4 years. He grew up in South Africa and earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Management Accounting from the North West University (Potchefstroom Campus). He then started teaching at a multi-cultural high school, after which he completed his PGCE in Accounting and Business Studies (FET and further education) from the North West University (Vanderbjil Campus). Even at a young age, he has experience in sport management, which he obtained from serving on a vast number of district and provincial sport committees. In his spare time, Mr. Venter likes to travel, explore, drive, spend time with his wife and dogs and enjoy nature.
